Algeria Passport Photo Maker

An Algerian biometric passport photo must measure exactly 35 × 45 mm on a plain white background, with the head 34–36 mm from chin to crown.

Many applications registered through the Ministry of Interior portal stall for small reasons: a shadow behind the head, a faint smile, glare on glasses, or a face that fills too little of the frame. Because the biometric system reads facial landmarks automatically, even a slight head tilt or uneven light can trigger a rejection and a second appointment at the daira or consulate. This page explains every rule and turns an ordinary selfie into a compliant photo.

Algeria Passport Photo Size in Pixels

The 35 × 45 mm frame converts to a fixed pixel count once you choose a resolution. Because the physical print is small, resolution matters more here than on larger formats — a low-DPI file looks acceptable on screen and prints visibly soft at 35 mm wide.

    ResolutionPixel widthPixel heightSuitable for
    72 DPI99 px127 pxScreen only — not acceptable
    150 DPI207 px266 pxBelow the biometric minimum
300 DPI413 px531 pxStandard for printing and enrolment
    600 DPI826 px1062 pxRecommended for sharpest prints

Upscaling a small image to reach 413 × 531 does not work: interpolation invents pixels rather than detail, and the result is soft around the eyes and hairline. Shoot at full camera resolution and crop down instead. Sharpness and compression standards are covered in passport photo resolution rules, and the crop mechanics in the crop guide.

    Passport Authority Overview

Algerian passports are issued by the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and Territorial Planning (Ministère de l'Intérieur, des Collectivités locales et de l'Aménagement du Territoire). Inside the country, most citizens complete the process at their local daira or the communal office (APC), while Algerians living overseas apply through their nearest embassy or consulate.

The Ministry runs the official portal at passeport.interieur.gov.dz, where you download the application form, book an appointment and register your biometric details. The biometric passport itself is valid for ten years for adults and five years for minors under nineteen. Because enrolment captures your photo digitally alongside fingerprints, the picture you bring has to meet the standard cleanly — there is no informal touch-up at the counter.

    Algerian Passport Application Process

The steps are broadly the same at home and abroad, though consulates sometimes vary the paperwork slightly:

    1. Complete the biometric passport form from the Ministry of Interior passport portal and book your appointment.
    2. Prepare four recent, identical colour photos on a white background at 35 × 45 mm.
    3. Gather your secured birth certificate (the S12), national ID card and, where requested, a blood type card.
    4. Pay the applicable fee and keep the receipt.
    5. Attend your appointment for fingerprint and photo enrolment, then collect the passport once it is ready.

Having your photos correct before the appointment is the single easiest way to avoid being turned away and rebooked.

    Algeria-Specific Photo Rules

Beyond the basic size, a few points matter most for Algerian applicants:

    Head coverings

A hijab or other head covering worn for religious reasons is accepted, provided your full face is visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, with both sides of the face clear and no shadow falling across it. Pin the fabric back from the jawline so the outline of the face reads cleanly. The head covering rules page covers how different authorities interpret this.

    Lighting and skin tone

Use soft, even light so your natural skin tone is reproduced accurately. Harsh flash that washes out the face or heavy shadow under the chin will both cause problems with the biometric read. See the shadow rules for lighting setups that avoid this.

    Consular differences

The domestic standard is 35 × 45 mm, but some Algerian consulates abroad request a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photo for their files. If you are applying outside Algeria, confirm the size with your consulate before printing. The 2x2 photo size page covers that alternative format if your post asks for it.

Visa photos are a separate specification

If you need a photo for an Algerian visa rather than a passport, the requirements are published separately. See our Algeria visa photo requirements guide.

    National Biometric Standards

The Algerian biometric passport follows internationally aligned facial-image guidance set out in ICAO Doc 9303. In practice that means the photo must be sharp and in focus, correctly exposed, and free of red-eye or reflections. Your face should be centred and squared to the camera, with a neutral expression and eyes open and clearly visible.

The image is stored in the passport chip, so anything that hides or distorts your features works against you: no filters that smooth or reshape the face, no heavy makeup that changes your appearance, and no digital editing beyond cropping and background cleanup. The goal is a faithful, current likeness that a machine and an officer can both match to you.

    Child Passport Photo Requirements

Children need their own biometric passport, and the same 35 × 45 mm size, white background and head-height band apply. There is no smaller format and no reduced head height for infants. The practical challenge is meeting the neutral-expression and open-eyes rules with a young child.

    Same size, same framing

35 × 45 mm frame with the head 34–36 mm chin to crown. No age exemption applies to dimensions.

    Child alone in the frame

No hands, arms, toys, dummy or other people may appear. For babies, lay the child on a plain white sheet and shoot from directly above.

    Looking toward the camera

The face must be unobscured and directed at the lens, with the eyes open where achievable.

    No shadow behind the head

Soft indirect daylight from the side of the room, never overhead from one side, which creates the background shadow that fails the check.

    Hair off the face

Hair must not fall across the eyes or obscure the outline of the face.

    Recent photo

The six-month rule matters more for children, whose appearance changes quickly. A photo that no longer resembles the child is refused.

Our tool crops and centres the result to the correct frame so you do not have to measure a wriggling toddler by hand. For positioning, lighting and timing technique with a baby, see the baby passport photo at home guide. The eyes requirements page covers the check that fails most often on child photos.

    Passport Renewal Photo Rules

Renewing an Algerian passport requires a fresh set of photos, not copies of the ones used previously. Even if you still resemble your old picture, the biometric enrolment expects a current image taken within the last six months.

Renewals are booked through the same Ministry portal, and you will again bring four matching prints to enrolment. If your appearance has changed since your last passport — for instance you have grown or removed a beard, or changed how you wear a head covering — make sure the new photo reflects how you look today.

    Digital Passport Submission Rules

The online pre-enrolment through the Ministry portal registers your application and appointment. The definitive photo capture happens at the enrolment desk, so the digital file you keep should be a high-resolution colour JPEG that matches your printed copies exactly.

When you download from the maker you get both a print-ready 35 × 45 mm file and a clean single image you can store. Keep the resolution at 300 DPI or higher, avoid compressing the file down to a blurry thumbnail, and make sure the version you print is identical to the version you keep on file. If your phone saves images as HEIC, convert them first with the HEIC to JPEG guide. General portal rules across countries are covered in the digital passport photo requirements guide.

Can I Take My Algeria Passport Photo at Home?

Yes. A modern phone is more than capable of producing a compliant Algerian passport photo if you control a few basics before you upload.

    Phone camera

Use the rear camera rather than the selfie camera, since the front lens distorts facial proportions. Shoot at full resolution and keep the phone steady, ideally propped up rather than held at arm's length. Switch off portrait mode, background blur and any beautification, because these alter facial geometry and are detected.

    Lighting

Face a window or a soft light source so your face is evenly lit. Avoid overhead lighting that casts shadows under the eyes and nose.

    Background and distance

Stand about half a metre in front of a plain white wall, with enough gap that no shadow lands on it. Keep your shoulders square and look straight into the lens with a neutral expression.

    Printing Your Algeria Passport Photo

Because appointments ask for four identical prints, printing is part of the specification rather than an afterthought. Ordinary office paper fades and will not pass at the counter.

Print resolution300 DPI minimum, 600 DPI recommended — disable fit-to-page and auto-scaling, which change the physical size
PaperGlossy or matte photo paper, 200–250 gsm. Plain copier paper is refused

    Algeria vs Neighbouring Countries

Algeria shares the 35 × 45 mm format with much of North Africa and Europe, which is why the same photo often works across the region. Confirm the background shade and head height before reusing a print.

Common Reasons Algerian Passport Photos Get Rejected

Most refusals at the daira, APC or consulate come down to a short list of avoidable mistakes. The full cross-country breakdown is in passport photo rejection reasons.

    • Photo not sized to 35 × 45 mm
    • Background not white, or tinted and patterned — see background rules
    • Head too large and cropped at the top
    • Head too small in the frame — see head size rules
    • Eye line too low or too high in the frame — see eyes requirements
    • Shadows on the face or behind the head — see shadow rules
    • Glare or reflection on glasses — see glasses rules
    • Hair falling across the eyes or face outline — see hair rules
    • Smiling or an open mouth
    • Photo older than six months
    • Poor or uneven lighting
    • Filters, portrait blur or editing that alter your features
    • Low resolution or a blurry, pixelated print
    • Printed on plain office paper instead of photo paper
    • The four prints are not identical or come from different sessions
    • Head covering that hides part of the face — see head covering rules

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Size & Specification

AlgeriaWhat is the official Algerian passport photo size?

The standard biometric size is 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall on a plain white background, which equals 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI with a 7:9 portrait ratio. Note that some Algerian consulates abroad ask for a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photo, so confirm the size with your local consulate before printing.

AlgeriaWhat is the Algerian passport photo size in pixels?

A 35 × 45 mm photo equals 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI and 826 × 1062 pixels at 600 DPI. Keep the file at 300 DPI or higher, because a lower resolution prints pixelated at this small physical size and will be refused at enrolment.

AlgeriaHow large should the head be in an Algerian passport photo?

The head must measure roughly 34 to 36 mm from the bottom of the chin to the crown, which fills about 76 to 80 percent of the 45 mm frame height. The eye line should sit around 30 to 36 mm up from the bottom edge, and the face must be centred and squared to the camera.

AlgeriaHow many photos do I need for an Algerian biometric passport?

Applicants are usually asked to bring four recent, identical colour photos with a white background. Our maker lets you print a full sheet so you have several matching copies for your appointment.

    Appearance & Compliance

What background colour is required for a passport photo?

A plain, evenly lit white background is required. There should be no shadows, patterns, furniture or other people visible behind you. Stand about half a metre clear of the wall so no shadow falls on it.

AlgeriaCan I wear a hijab or head covering in my Algerian passport photo?

Yes. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are accepted as long as your full face is visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, with no shadows across the face and both edges of the face clearly shown.

Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?

Glasses are best removed. If you must keep them, the frames cannot cover your eyes and there must be no glare or reflection on the lenses. Tinted or dark lenses are never accepted.

Can I smile in my passport photo?

No. You need a neutral expression with your mouth closed and both eyes open, looking straight into the camera. A smile or raised eyebrows can cause the photo to be rejected by the automated facial-landmark check.

How recent does a passport photo need to be?

Your photo should be taken within the last six months and reflect your current appearance. If your look has changed noticeably, for example new facial hair or a very different hairstyle, use a fresh photo rather than an older one.

    Children, Printing & Authority

AlgeriaWhat are the photo rules for an Algerian child passport?

The same 35 × 45 mm size, white background and head-height band apply to children, with no age exemption. The child must be alone in the frame with no supporting hands, toys, dummy or other people visible, and no shadow behind the head. For babies, lay the child on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above. See the child passport photo requirements section.

AlgeriaHow do I print an Algerian passport photo at home?

Print at 300 DPI or higher on glossy or matte photo paper. Ordinary office paper fades and is refused at the counter. A 4 × 6 inch sheet holds six 35 × 45 mm copies and an A4 sheet holds around twenty, which covers the four prints most appointments require. Cut with a guillotine for square edges.

AlgeriaWhich authority sets Algerian passport photo rules?

The Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and Territorial Planning issues the Algerian biometric passport. Applications and appointments are managed through the official portal passeport.interieur.gov.dz, and photos are checked at the daira, APC or consulate.
