How to Resize a Photo for Exam Forms

Get your photo portal-ready in under a minute — no software, no technical knowledge needed.

Choose Your Exam Preset

Click the exam button — SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NEET, or others. The tool automatically fills in the required width, height, and maximum file size based on the official notification. If your exam isn't listed, select Custom Size and enter the values manually from your admit-card or instruction page.

Upload Your Photo

Click the upload box and select your photo from your phone gallery, laptop, or scanner output. JPG, PNG, and WebP formats are all accepted. The original file can be up to 10MB — it does not need to be pre-cropped or pre-sized. A clear, front-facing photo with a plain background works best.

Click Resize & Download

Our engine resizes your photo to exact pixel dimensions, applies smart center-crop to keep your face in frame, then iteratively compresses quality until the file falls within the KB limit. The output is a standard JPG — the format accepted by every government exam portal in India.

Upload to the Exam Portal

Save the downloaded JPG and upload it directly to your exam registration or admit card portal. The file will meet all dimension, format, and file-size requirements. Your photo is automatically removed from our servers within 2 hours.

Common Photo Upload Problems & Fixes

If the exam portal rejected your photo, one of these is the likely cause — and here is how to fix it.

📁

File Exceeds Maximum Size

The portal shows "File size exceeds limit" or "Maximum file size is 50KB." This happens when your camera photo is several MB.

✅ Fix: Use this tool. Select your exam preset and upload — compression is automatic.

📐

Invalid Image Dimensions

Error: "Image dimensions do not match." Government portals check exact pixel width and height at upload time.

✅ Fix: Select the correct exam preset — the tool resizes to the exact required dimensions.

🖼️

Unsupported File Format

Error: "Only JPG/JPEG format is accepted." PNG and WebP files are rejected by most government portals.

✅ Fix: Upload any format here — the output is always a JPG file compatible with all portals.

🌫️

Blurry or Low-Quality Photo

Portals may flag excessively compressed or blurry images. Over-compressing a small original file causes this.

✅ Fix: Start with a clear, well-lit photo taken in good lighting. Avoid screenshots of photos.

✍️

Signature Upload Rejected

Signature is "too large," "wrong dimensions," or "not JPG." Signature requirements differ from photo requirements.

✅ Fix: Use Custom Size — enter signature dimensions (typically 400×200 px, 20KB) from your exam notice.

Photo Upload Failed

Generic upload failure. Often caused by slow internet mid-upload, browser cache issues, or antivirus blocking the upload.

✅ Fix: Try a different browser. Clear cache. Ensure the file is under 10MB before uploading to the portal.

Background Colour Issues

Some exams require a plain white background. Casual selfies often have coloured or busy backgrounds.

✅ Fix: Use a photo taken against a white wall. Our resizer preserves your background as-is.

🔢

File Below Minimum Size

A few portals enforce a minimum KB — for example, "photo must be at least 20KB." Heavily-compressed files fail this check.

✅ Fix: Use a higher-resolution source photo. Our tool targets the upper end of the allowed range by default.

Government Exam Photo Standards — Everything You Need to Know

Why Government Portals Are Strict About Photo Size

Exam portals enforce file-size limits because they process millions of applications and store all images on centralized servers. A file slightly over the limit — even 51KB when 50KB is the max — will trigger an automatic rejection. The validation happens before a human ever reviews your application.

Dimension validation is equally strict. Portals use automated scripts that check pixel dimensions at the moment of upload. A 201×231px photo will fail a 200×230px requirement every time, even though it looks identical to the human eye.

cm vs px — How Dimensions Are Specified

Exam notifications often specify dimensions in centimetres (e.g., 3.5cm × 4.5cm), but portals validate in pixels. The pixel equivalent depends on DPI (dots per inch):

  • At 96 DPI: 3.5cm × 4.5cm ≈ 132×170 px
  • At 100 DPI: 3.5cm × 4.5cm ≈ 138×177 px
  • At 200 DPI: 3.5cm × 4.5cm ≈ 276×354 px

SSC portals accept 200×230 px. UPSC accepts 350×350 px. Always use the pixel value from the official portal, not a manual DPI calculation.

Passport Size Photo — Indian Standard

Indian passport applications require a 35mm × 45mm (approximately 2 inch × 2 inch) colour photograph with a plain white background. The face must cover 70–80% of the frame. Digital uploads for visa applications are typically accepted as JPG under 1MB.

For exam forms that ask for "passport size photo," the standard size is 200×230 px or 350×450 px at 96 DPI — not the passport application standard. Check your specific exam notification.

Signature Upload Requirements

Most government exam portals require a separate signature image alongside your photograph. The signature must be:

  • Signed on white paper with a black/blue pen
  • Scanned or photographed clearly (no shadows)
  • Sized to approximately 140×60 px at 10–30 KB (SSC/IBPS/RRB)
  • JPEG format only

Use signature-resizer class="text-blue-700 font-semibold">our Signature Resizer or select Custom Size on this page to resize your scanned signature image to the correct dimensions and file size.

Admission Form Photo Requirements

University and college admission portals (DU, CUET, state universities) follow similar rules. CUET UG forms accept photos up to 200KB at 200×230 px. Scholarship portals like NSP (National Scholarship Portal) require the same. Always upload in JPG format regardless of what format the original photo was taken in.

Recruitment Portal Standards (Police, SSB, CAPF)

Defence and paramilitary recruitment portals are strict about photo quality. The face must be clearly visible, eyes open, no sunglasses, and the background must be plain light-coloured or white. File size limits are typically 20–50 KB. Any photo below 20 KB may appear too compressed and be flagged by the automated system.

Why Students Trust ClonyPDF for Exam Photos

Exact KB Targeting

Government portals reject files even 1KB over the limit. Our compression loop iterates in 5-quality increments until the file lands safely within your target — not just below it, but within the accepted range.

Preset Dimensions from Official Notifications

Every preset is built from the official exam notification, not guesswork. SSC uses 200×230 px at 50KB; UPSC uses 350×350 px at 300KB. We update presets whenever a new notification revises requirements.

Privacy by Design

Your photo is processed server-side, saved to a private temporary folder, and automatically deleted within 2 hours. We do not read, store, or share your personal photos. No account is needed.

Smart Face-Crop Algorithm

When your original photo has a different aspect ratio than required, our cropper centres on the face by biasing toward the upper-middle of the frame — keeping your face fully visible rather than cut at the forehead or chin.

Editorial Note: This tool and its requirement table are reviewed by our technical team against current exam notifications. Last reviewed: . If you notice a discrepancy in exam requirements, please contact us — we update presets promptly.

ClonyPDF is an independent online tools platform. We are not affiliated with SSC, UPSC, NTA, IBPS, or any government body. All requirement data is sourced from official exam notifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I resize a photo to 50KB for an SSC exam?
Select the SSC preset at the top of this page — it automatically sets 200×230 px and a 50KB target. Upload your photo and click Resize. The output JPG will be within the 20–50KB range accepted by the SSC portal. You do not need to adjust any other settings.
How do I resize a photo to 20KB for a signature upload?
Select Custom Size, enter width 400 px, height 200 px, and set Max KB to 20. Upload your scanned signature image. The output will be a 20KB JPG suitable for SSC, IBPS, and RRB signature fields. Alternatively, use our dedicated Signature Resizer for preset signature dimensions.
How do I resize a photo to 100KB for NEET or JEE?
Select the NEET preset (400×600 px, 200KB limit) or use Custom Size with Max KB set to 100. For JEE, NTA accepts photos between 10KB and 200KB — our tool targets within that range automatically. The output is always a JPG as required by the NTA portal.
Why was my photo rejected by the UPSC / SSC portal even after resizing?
The most common reasons for portal rejection are: (1) file size slightly over the limit after re-saving; (2) colour space set to CMYK instead of RGB; (3) the photo was saved as PNG renamed to JPG. Our tool exports a clean RGB JPEG — if rejection continues, ensure you are uploading the file downloaded from this tool and not re-editing it elsewhere before upload.
Can I use this tool on a mobile phone?
Yes. The tool works fully on Android and iOS browsers — Chrome, Safari, and Firefox mobile are all supported. Tap the upload box, select a photo from your gallery, choose your exam preset, and tap Resize. The download will save to your phone's Downloads folder or Photos app depending on your browser settings.
What dimensions does SSC require for photos?
SSC (CGL, CHSL, GD, MTS) requires a photograph of 200×230 pixels (approximately 3.5cm × 4.5cm) in JPG format between 20KB and 50KB. The signature must be 140×60 px at 10–20KB. These values are pre-set in the SSC button on this page.
What is the photo size for IBPS PO and Clerk exams?
IBPS requires a passport size photograph of 200×230 px (JPG, 20–50KB) and a signature of 140×60 px (JPG, 10–20KB). The IBPS preset on this page is pre-configured with these exact values. The same dimensions apply to IBPS PO, Clerk, SO, and RRB exams.
Does this tool work for passport size photos?
Yes, for exam portals that ask for "passport size photos." The standard exam portal size is 200×230 px or 350×450 px — covered by our SSC or Custom presets. For actual Indian passport applications (35mm × 45mm printed photos), the requirements are different. See our Passport Size Photo Resizer for that specific format.
Is JPG the only format accepted by exam portals?
Yes — virtually all Indian government exam portals (SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NTA for NEET/JEE, RRB) accept only JPG/JPEG format for photo and signature uploads. Our tool always outputs a standard JPEG file regardless of whether you upload JPG, PNG, or WebP.
Is my photo stored or shared after I upload it?
No. Your uploaded photo is processed on our server and saved to a private temporary directory. It is automatically deleted within 2 hours of upload. We do not view, analyze, or share your photos. There is also a "Delete Immediately" link on the download screen if you want to remove the file right after downloading.
Why does my photo look blurry after compression?
Blurring during compression happens when the source photo has a very low resolution or when the compression ratio is extreme (trying to compress a 2MB photo to 10KB). For best results, start with a clear photo taken in good lighting at standard mobile camera quality (at least 1MP). Avoid screenshots of photos. Our tool targets the highest quality achievable within your KB limit.
Can I resize a photo for a state PSC or scholarship portal?
Yes. Most State PSC exams (BPSC, MPSC, KPSC, UPPSC) and scholarship portals like NSP follow the same standard as SSC — 200×230 px, 20–50KB, JPG format. Select the SSC preset or use Custom Size if your notification specifies different values. The output will work on any portal that accepts standard JPG uploads.
